Cal State L.A.'s Project GEAR UP
to Present Workshop
for Parents and Students
of Griffith Middle School

What:
Project GEAR UP at California State University, Los Angeles will present "Overcoming Obstacles," a motivational workshop focusing on academics and the importance of a college education. Scheduled to speak at the workshop are:
* Martha Saucedo, government affairs and international trade specialist, Mattel Corporation
* Maria "Lou" Calanche, director of community outreach for the health sciences campus, University of Southern California
* Carlos Tejeda, professor of Educational Foundations and Interdivisional Studies, California State University, Los Angeles
* Martín Castro, president, Mexican American Opportunity Foundation

When:
Saturday, December 9, 2000, 1:30-3:30 p.m.

Where:
Cal State L.A. Gym, P.E. Building. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Fwy., at the interchange of the 10 and 710 Fwys. Public (permit dispenser) parking is available in north Parking Structure II or Lots C and G.

More:
Project GEAR UP is an innovative Department of Education grant focused on preparing a greater number of students for college from low-income, under-serviced areas.

In addition to the featured speakers, there will be several booths representing local community programs and resources including Healthy Start from Garfield High School, MALDEF, the East Los Angeles YMCA and Cal SOAP from Cal State L.A.
