Names Dean of Graduate Studies and Research
Los Angeles, CA Â Jose L. Galvan (Los Angeles
resident) has been appointed to the position of Dean of
Graduate Studies and Research at California State
University, Los Angeles, effective July 1, 2005.
In this capacity, Galvan will be the primary advocate for the
UniversityÂs graduate programs, promote research and sponsored
programs, and facilitate the development of international academic
programs. In addition, Galvan will provide oversight of all
presidentially charted centers and institutes as well as campus
clinics.
Since 1998, Galvan has served as Cal State L.A.Âs Associate
Dean of Graduate Studies. He has worked in all areas of
responsibility assigned to the Office, including the development
of new masterÂs and joint doctoral programs, administering the
various graduate student programs, and chairing the Graduate
Studies Policy Advisory Council. He has been active in assisting
faculty to develop competitive grants and contracts, and has
coordinated international academic program activities at the
University.
Galvan earned a B.A. in English, M.A. in Applied Linguistics,
and Ph.D. in Psycholinguistics at the University of Texas at
Austin. He joined the faculty of the TESOL Program in the Charter
College of Education in 1990 and served as its coordinator for six
years before his appointment as Associate Dean. An active
Principal Investigator with more than $6 million in grants and
contracts, he has participated in several proposal review panels
at the national level, most recently as a member of the National
Science Foundation (NSF) review panel on graduate education in
Research on Learning and Education in August 2004.
