CSULA faculty lauded for her work in rehabilitation education, services
Council honors Frances Siu with ‘New Career in Rehab Education Award’
Los Angeles, CA – In acknowledgement of her achievements and services in the field of rehabilitation, Frances Siu (Monterey Park resident)—assistant professor of special education and counseling at Cal State L.A.—was recently presented the 2011 New Career in Rehabilitation Education Award by the National Council on Rehabilitation Education (NCRE).
Professor Siu, who also serves as coordinator of the University’s Rehabilitation Services Program, was recognized as one of only four honorees at the National Council on Rehabilitation Education Spring 2011 Conference held in Manhattan Beach.
“I am humbled, honored, and at the same time, excited to receive the award of New Career in Rehabilitation Education,” said Siu. “The award means a great deal to me personally and professionally. My appreciation goes to the National Council on Rehabilitation Education for giving me this award.”
Siu added, “My other thanks go to the students and colleague who nominated me for the award. Being recognized for my work in rehabilitation education gives me a sense of urgency in my efforts for others and to be more resourceful and resilient.”

A CSULA faculty member since summer 2009, Siu has conducted research in the area of violence against people with disabilities and is an avid supporter of returned military veterans in their pursuit of higher education. She is co-editor of the third edition of the rehabilitation education textbook, Medical, Psychosocial, and Vocational Aspects of Disability, and author and co-author of 13 book chapters and refereed journal articles.
Siu received her B.A. in psychology and M.S. in rehabilitation counseling from CSULA, and her Ph.D. in rehabilitation counselor education from the University of Texas, Austin.
Her accolades include the Ronald McNair Scholarship, the Sally Casanova Pre-Doctoral Fellowship, the California State University Chancellor’s Doctoral Incentive, the Rehabilitation Services Administration Doctoral Training Fellowship, and the University of Texas at Austin Continuing Fellowship.
The National Council on Rehabilitation Education semi-annual conference is a means of facilitating communication and sharing information among professionals involved in training, recruiting, hiring and enhancing the development of qualified rehabilitation counselors.
NCRE is a professional organization of educators dedicated to quality services for persons with disabilities through education and research. The Council is the only national organization representing rehabilitation education and research—providing a forum where unified positions can be state on issues involving training priorities, federal funding, and research activities in our field.
