| Cal State L.A. Associate Professor Los Angeles-June 8, 1999-Cal State L.A. associate professor of education Edward Negrete Jr. was chosen on February 23 to be director of the Los Angeles Board of Education's new Human Relations Education Commission. The commission was created last August to replace eight ethnic and interest-based education commissions eliminated by the board in April of last year. Part of the commission's responsibility will be to address conflicts that arise in this ethnically and culturally diverse metropolis. Negrete, 58, has worked with the Anti-Defamation League and was a teacher, counselor, administrator and evaluator in the Los Angeles Unified School District from 1968 to 1985. He came to Cal State L.A. in 1985 and will continue to teach at the University while leading the Human Relations Education Commission. "This job came at the right place and time in my life. I have all the tools, all the skills-now I have to use them," said Negrete. Negrete would like to build programs that foster understanding between diverse people and that tackle prejudice at an early age. Negrete said he also wants to work closely with like-minded organizations-within and outside of the LAUSD-to spark a far reaching effort. The Cal State L.A. educator took over his new post in April 1999.
