Cal State L.A. Presents Golden Apple Awards to
Ten Outstanding Student Teachers

Los Angeles, CA - May 27, 1998 -- The Charter School of Education at California State University, Los Angeles recently recognized ten outstanding student teachers during its annual "Day of the Teacher" reception at the Luminarias Restaurant. This year's special guest speaker was Robert L. Salley, director of the Certification, Assignment and Waivers Division of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing.

Every year, the Charter School of Education holds a reception to honor all of the graduates of the Cal State L.A. credential programs in elementary, secondary and special education, in addition to selecting students who have demonstrated exceptional performance as a student teacher.

This year's Golden Apple award recipients are Alicia Romero (Los Angeles), Kenna Desta (Duarte), Angelica Renteria-Alexander (Monterey Park), Iris Renteria (Los Angeles), Safini Convey (Los Angeles), Florence Goh (South Pasadena), Diana Mariscal (Los Angeles), Hyun Won (Los Angeles), Luis Velasco Jr. (Los Angeles), and Scot Sea (Altadena).

Each 1998 outstanding student teacher was nominated by a member of the University faculty. Students must have been rated in the top 10 percent of student teachers observed by a faculty during the past academic year and must have provided exemplary work in the following practices: development and implementation of instruction that encourages students to think; inclusion of students' cultural values and cultural knowledge in lesson content and activities; development of learning opportunities that are responsive to language diversity; development and implementation of learning opportunities that effectively address the needs of children with special needs (special education); knowledge and exposure to the cultures that characterize the school community; development of culturally-relevant curriculum materials; and completion of all the Direct Teaching (student teaching) competencies at an exemplary level.

During the evening, C. Lamar Mayer, former associate dean of Education and emeritus professor of Special Education at Cal State L.A., was recognized for his outstanding contributions to education.

The event was made possible through the Cal State L.A. Teacher Diversity Partnership Grant and the Friends of the Charter School of Education. For more information, contact the Student Services Office, Cal State L.A. Charter School of Education, at (323) 343-4320.
