WINTER BLUES COME TO THE LUCKMAN
Chicago Blues in L.A.,
Part I - November 13, 1999

A stellar lineup of Windy City blues artists including Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson & The Magic Rockers, Jimmy Dawkins, and B.J. Sharp & Her Huzz Band will kick off a two-part Chicago Blues in L.A. series on November 13 at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex on the Cal State L.A. campus.

About the artists...
Legendary Mississippi born bluesman, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson received a 1999 Grammy Nomination in the Best Traditional Blues Album category for this latest CD, Got To Find A Way. Luther followed the Mississippi-to-Chicago migration and became one of the leading proponents of the westside-style Chicago blues guitarists. Luther started playing with various bands in Chicago including the Ray Scott band, Magic Sam and Bobby Rush. His growing popularity landed him a spot in Muddy Waters' band. In 1980 Luther moved to the east coast and formed his own band, The Magic Rockers.

Jimmy Dawkins arrived in Chicago around 1955 and teamed up with Lester Hinton to work the streets. Jimmy Dawkins' gut-wrenching vocals and blistering guitar solos earned him the nickname "Fast Fingers." After forming his own band in the sixties, Jimmy Dawkins started playing with some of the best Chicago blues bands around such as the Jimmy Rogers band, Sonny Thompson, Wild Child Butler, Magic Sam, Luther Allison and others. He played with John Lee Hooker, Carey Bell, Eddie Taylor and the Chicago Blues Festival band that toured Europe. He won the Downbeat Magazine International Critics Poll as best rock/pop/blues group deserving wider recognition, as well as the French equivalent of the Grammy for his album "Fast Fingers." Blues lovers from around the world know Jimmy Dawkins as a consummate guitarist, vocalist and entertainer.

What happens when you mix comedy and the blues? You get a humorous look at life through the eyes of B.J. Sharp's razor sharp humor and southern fried blues. B.J. Sharp comes to Southern California from her Southern Baptist roots in Kentucky. She began singing at the Baptist church where her father was a deacon. She has made a name for herself with her downhome sense of humor, powerful vocals and a serious passion for the blues. Her debut CD, Never Felt the Blues was warmly received by blues radio across the country and in Europe. B.J. Sharp's stellar performances in Paris, France and at the Playboy Jazz Festival were complete successes. She received a BAMMIE nomination for Outstanding Blues Artist in Southern California.

Join us again for more Chicago Blues in L.A. on February 12, 2000, featuring Son Seals, Sugar Blue, and the Delgado Brothers with Juke Logan.
