 | 2001 CSU Bautzer Faculty at Cal State L.A. Los Angeles, CA -- Chino Hills resident James Newton, professor of Music at California State University, Los Angeles, was recently named the UniversityÂs sixth Bautzer Faculty at the CSU Advancement Academy Conference in San Diego. The Bautzer University Faculty Advancement Award enables faculty to learn more about professional university development at national conferences and CSU workshops throughout the year. The scholarships were established in 1996 as a result of a gift from Nicola D. Bautzer (in memory of her husband Gregson Bautzer, a member of the CSU Board of Trustees and the CSU Foundation Board of Governors) and matching funds from the CSU Advancement Academy, to recognize the importance of the involvement of faculty members in CSU advancement efforts, particularly among alumni and within local communities. The goal is to increase new ambassadors for the campuses by increasing their understanding of the art and practice of development, and sharing that knowledge with their colleagues on their home campuses. Professor Newton, named in this yearÂs Downbeat critics poll as the top jazz flutist for the 20th year in a row and as #2 jazz flutist in the 2001 Downbeat readers poll, is an alumnus of Cal State L.A. (Newton received his B.A. in music from Cal State L.A. in 1980.) He has currently formed a new world-class jazz orchestra at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex. The orchestra has attracted some of the top jazz talent in the city, many of whom worked with Newton in his previous big band and in his quartet. A Guggenheim Fellow, Newton is at home in a variety of genres, and has won numerous awards, grants and commissions in jazz, opera, ballet, classical and chamber music. He has worked with some of the great artists in both jazz and classical music, including David Murray, the New York Philharmonic, Kenny Burrell, the Los Angeles Philharmonic New Music Group, Herbie Hancock, John Carter, and many others. His latest CD, As the Sound of Many Waters, recorded with the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, was recently released on New World Records. Newton, who also serves as the LuckmanÂs Director of Music Programming and Research, is developing an eclectic schedule of jazz, classical and world music. Past Bautzer Faculty at Cal State L.A. include professors Jaime Regalado, director of Cal State L.A.Âs Edmund G. ÂPat Brown Institute for Public Affairs; Michael Roffe, department of Psychology; Carlos Robles, director of CEA-CREST; and Simeon Slovacek, division of Educational Foundations and Interdivisional Studies, and Barbara Clark, division of Special Education, both in the UniversityÂs Charter College of Education.
