Math whizzes converge at Cal State L.A. to compete in problem-solving competition

CSULA Math Club to host 64th Annual American Mathematics Contest

Los Angeles – Dedicated to strengthening the mathematical capabilities of our nation's youth, the 64th American Mathematics Contest (AMC) at Cal State L.A. on Tuesday, Feb. 5, and Wednesday, Feb. 20, will identify, recognize and reward excellence in mathematics.

The competition—hosted by the CSULA Math Club—will be held from 4-6 p.m. in the Hertzberg-Davis Forensic Science Center, room 212, on the CSULA campus.

It is aimed at spurring interest in mathematics and developing talent through the excitement of friendly competition at problem solving in a timed format.

In 2012, more than 220,000 students from 24,200 schools participated in the AMC 10 (for 10th grade and below) and AMC 12 (for 12th grade and below) contests. Students from Arcadia to Thousand Oaks will participate in this upcoming challenge.

Both the AMC 10 and AMC 12 will feature a 25-question, 75-minute multiple choice examination in secondary school mathematics containing problems, which can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts.

“The AMC 12 and the AMC 10 are part of a series of contest sponsored each year by The Mathematical Association of America,” said AMC director Steven Dunbar.

The AMC offers the only math competition series in the country, which leads to the United States of America Mathematical Olympiad, the United States of America Junior Mathematics Olympiad and the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program.  From this group of students, the AMC sends the highly competitive USA Team to the prestigious annual International Mathematical Olympiad.
