Assessment 23-24: New Student and Family Engagement

Orientation Houses - Community Chat:  New students are added to one of four Houses: King, Kennedy, Rosser, or Salazar. Each House has an online channel in the Cal State LA GETmobile app, where students can connect, ask questions, and share interests before their summer orientation.

5,552 students participated.

The Orientation Houses align with Cal State LA's community engagement domain.  These chats enable academic and social engagement, fostering a sense of belonging and community

As a result of participating in the House Community Chats, new students will engage with their fellow students on a consistent basis outside of the classroom.

From May 2023 to June 2024, 5,552 students made 5,962 posts on the House Community Chats, with 17,832 comments.

House Participation

King and Salazar Houses had nearly twice the participation of Kennedy and Rosser.

Conclusion

Overall, the data shows strong student engagement, especially among freshmen.

The data shows strong engagement with House Chats, making it a viable platform to communicate with new students (86.8% of those who attended Orientation in summer 2023). Our department will use this platform to share information about events, activities, and services. By encouraging offline interactions and having a dedicated staff member to manage engagement, we aim to increase student involvement.
