Nafiseh Moghimi, PhD, funded by the NIH, is developing ultrasound-responsive nanodiamond-loaded microneedle patches for biofilm removal and wound healing. Bacterial biofilms, which contribute to 80% of chronic wounds, represent a significant clinical challenge due to their high resistance to antibiotics and the difficulty of penetrating their protective matrix. These innovative microneedle patches enable targeted delivery to deep tissue infections, while ultrasound exposure enhances biofilm disruption and eradication, addressing a critical unmet need in chronic wound management.
