Becoming Bilingual and Bicultural in Japanese and English: Why Is It Difficult?

Becoming bilingual and bicultural is a life-time endeavor in any language.  Why is it difficult?  Answers to this question depend on many factors including the age at which learners start the second language, the nature of the language and culture they wish to acquire, the learning environment, the learning method, and learner characteristics such as personality, aptitude, motivation, learning style, and educational level.  In this talk, I will focus on linguistic and cultural explanations for difficulties that adult learners experience in acquiring native-speaker-level proficiencies in Japanese and English.
