Position:

Graduate Assistant for the Department of Liberal Studies to support LBS 2666, Science Fiction, Film and Television (also listed as TVF 2666)

Starting Date:

Beginning Fall 2023

Minimum Qualifications:

Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of English or Television, Film, and Media Studies. Graduate Assistants must be registered in a CSU graduate degree program and must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of that graduate degree during the appointment period. Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment.

Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.

Preferred Qualifications:

The applicant should display an ease and comfort interacting with students of all ethnicities. Advanced research skills and writing proficiency, as well as an ability to mentor undergraduate students, are preferred. The ideal candidate will have some familiarity with literary or critical analysis of film, and/or television and media.

Hiring Criteria:

The successful applicant should

  • be an effective writer and communicator,
  • possess basic technology competencies,
  • have working availability between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Monday through Friday,
  • have a minimum G.P.A of  3.0,
  • and demonstrate ability or potential to work effectively and collegially with students, staff, and faculty.

The successful applicant must be present during class meetings.

Duties:

Under the general supervision of the faculty member, the Graduate Assistant will provide assistance in the instruction of students by conducting small discussion groups in zoom breakout rooms related to online course lecturers and discussions; assisting with online screening of films; maintaining office hours; and clarifying course material or course content for students. The GA will perform clerical or other routine tasks, including grading examinations; recording grades; assisting faculty with research and preparation of course materials; participating in the evaluation of students' work; and other related tasks.

Salary:

Graduate Assistant-Academic Year range, $2,943-$3,972 [Initial salary commensurate with qualifications and experience] (per salary schedule 7/1/2022)
 
This appointment will be for an average of 4 hours per week.
