Position:

Graduate Assistant for Community Engagement in the English Department

Starting Date:

On-going. Positions will be filled as needed each semester.

Minimum Qualifications:

Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of English in good standing.

Graduate Assistants must be registered in a CSU graduate degree program and must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of that graduate degree during the appointment period.  Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment, and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment.

As a University dedicated to engagement, service and the public good, the successful candidate will be expected to join faculty, staff, students and administrators in a commitment to these purposes.

Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.

Hiring Criteria:

The applicant should be an effective writer and be interested in working on community and civic engagement initiatives in the English Department. The applicant should possess some familiarity with office productivity software, with the ideal candidate having some familiarity with using databases and/or spreadsheets to track and coordinate people, events, and activities. The applicant should be able to work well with both faculty and students.

Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Department Chair, the Graduate Assistant will work with the department faculty on facilitating specific community engagement projects. At present, the department is seeking an individual to work on the “Words Uncaged,” a community engagement partnership between Cal State LA, the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, and Karma Rescue. Duties might include coordinating the exchange of work done by Cal State LA students with work done by inmates, developing classroom activities and instructional materials to be used in the program, creating and managing an archive of instructional materials related to this program and to community engagement in general, and assisting faculty with the preparation of course materials.

Salary:

Current Graduate Assistant rate for an average of 00 hours per week.
