Graduate Assistant for English

Minimum Qualifications:

Degree-seeking graduate student in the Department of English in good standing.

Graduate Assistants must be registered in a CSU graduate degree program and must be enrolled in courses towards the completion of that graduate degree during the appointment period.  Applicants should have the ability to relate well to others within the academic environment, and demonstrate ability and/or interest in working in a multiethnic, multicultural environment.

Exceptions to the minimum eligibility qualifications may be granted at the sole discretion of the University.

Hiring Criteria:

Appointments as a Graduate Assistant are made based on evidence of academic achievement, potential for academic success and expressed interest in, and availability for, performing the duties of a Graduate Assistant. In addition, the applicant should be an effective writer, and should possess some familiarity with office productivity software, with the ideal candidate having some familiarity and skill with coordinating people, events, and activities. The applicant should be able to work well with both faculty and students.

Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Department Chair or an assigned faculty member, the Graduate Assistant might be assigned to provide instructional support or program-level support. Instructional support includes, but is not limited to, proctoring and grading examinations, recording grades, assisting faculty with research and preparation of course materials, participating in the evaluation of students’ work, and conducting small discussion groups and/or meeting individually with students to clarify course material for students enrolled in large lecture courses. Program-level support includes, but is not limited to, coordinating students and student assistants in assigned civic learning activities associated with the department’s upper division general education courses, and planning and coordinating key academic events, such as the graduate student conference Significations.

Salary:

Current Graduate Assistant rate for an average of 20 hours per week, depending on assignment
