Kinky musical group to perform Saturday, Oct. 5, at the Luckman Theatre on the CSULA campus.

The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at Cal State L.A. will commemorate its milestone 20th season with an impressive roster of international headliners.

“I am thrilled to present our 2013-2014 season of amazing artists from around the world. The arts invigorate, challenge, and inspire, and this season promises to be the most exciting ever,” said Wendy Baker, executive director of the Luckman Complex.

Kicking off the season will be a unique and authentic performance by the Mexican techno-funk band, Kinky, on Saturday, Oct. 5, at 8 p.m.

An intelligent manifestation of rock, electronic, and Mexican rhythms, Kinky produces riveting sounds and mixes that have earned them a reputation for being musical pioneers. Kinky was nominated for Best Alternative Music Album (Sueño de la Máquina) and Best Alternative Song (Negro Día) at the 2012 Latin Grammy Awards.

According to Reed Johnson of the L.A. Times, “No group embodies the region’s musical multiplicity more than Kinky. Its signature sound combines insanely catchy disco-funk rhythms that music-licensing and ad-campaign directors adore. But its lyrics don’t always stick to the sunny side of the street, and there’s an anarchic alter-ego to its bouncy, good-natured stage persona.”

Sinéad O'’Connor will make her Luckman stage debut on Sunday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. Known for her eclectic musical style and raw emotion, O'Connor reinvented what it means to be a female recording artist. Following the release of her ninth and latest album, How About I Be Me (And You Be You)?, O'Connor has received the most resounding praise to date in her celebrated 25-year career. O'’Connor'’s appearance at the Luckman will be her only performance in Los Angeles this year.

Les Nubians.
Les Nubians to perform Saturday, Oct. 19, 8 p.m., at the Luckman Theatre on the CSULA campus.

This year’s Luckman season will also include concerts featuring Grammy-nominated band Les Nubians, award-winning Malian singer and guitarist Rokia Traoré, Fado singer and composer Antonio Zambujo, genre-bending artist Karsha Kale, singer and former first lady of France Carla Bruni, and the world-class Luckman Jazz Orchestra conducted by Charles Owen.

In addition, the Luckman will host legendary actress and model Isabella Rossellini with a Los Angeles-premiere of Green Porno: Live On Stage, and the Kibbutz Contemporary Dance Company with a premiere of its critically-acclaimed theatrical event, If At All.

The Luckman Gallery will open Saturday, Sept. 14, with Ground Truths, an exhibition of work that uses re-enactment, magic, substitution, and projection to explore the corporeal aspects of remote viewing.

Consisting of painting, sculpture and video, the work in this exhibition employs remoteness and distance as powerful tools with which to gain perspective on our desires. Participating artists include Mary Hill, Anna Mayer, Nancy Popp, and Rosha Yaghmai, among others.

“The arts are an integral part of a thriving society. It is with great pride that I am tasked with the responsibility of leading an organization that serves the community in such an important way,” said Baker.

The Luckman Fine Arts Complex at CSULA delivers cutting-edge music, dance, and visual arts from around the world to the Los Angeles community.
