Luis Antonio EcheverriaNewberry values commitment, education and hard work.

He is graduating with his Master of Science in counseling with the option in rehabilitation and career counseling certificate.

Luis joined the Marine Corps when he was 17 years old. During his 12 years as a Marine, he was sent to Norway for training as well as 11 countries in South America. In 2003, when Operation Iraqi Freedom was launched, Luis was deployed for a combat tour to the Middle East.

While on active duty, he earned his associate's degree in general studies from Central Texas College in 2011. After leaving the military, Luis transferred to Cal State L.A. and he earned his Bachelor of Science in rehabilitation services in 2013.

During his time at the University, Luis worked on behalf of fellow student veterans. He was involved in organizing campus commemorations, including those held on Memorial Day. And he also assisted the Veterans Resource Center in its efforts to advocate on behalf of Cal State L.A.’s veteran community.

After graduation, Luis plans to become a certified rehabilitation counselor and licensed professional clinical counselor. His career goals also include pursuing a doctoral degree and continuing to serve his fellow veterans and their families.
