Eagle-Con at Cal State L.A. brings together indie comics, superheroes, critical thinking, and an insider’s view of the industry

Event is part of week-long celebration of William A. Covino’s investiture as seventh president of Cal State L.A.
 
WHAT:                         Eagle-Con, an event at Cal State L.A. inspired by the annual Comic-Con convention in San Diego, will explore issues of race, gender, orientation, identity and representation in comic books, fantasy and science fiction, while celebrating the boundless imagination of artists who turn “ordinary humans” into life-long superhero devotees. 
With fun activities and people dressed in elaborate costumes, Eagle-Con is a place where people of all levels of comic book fandom will come together to learn, explore, and grow.
 
Eagle-Con’s Guests of Honor will be Cal State L.A. alumnus Rashidi Harper, a renowned director, writer and producer, and Michael and Denise Okuda, who wrote the Star Trek Encyclopedia.  Eagle-Con’s guest writers and artists include: Elliot S! Maggin: Dr. De Witt Douglas Kilgore; Hannibal Tabu; Jason Reeves; Chocolate Covered CosPlay; The Gibbs Sisters; and steampunk writer Balogun Ojetade.
 
Eagle-Con is a collaboration between Cal State L.A.’s University-Student Union and the College of Arts & Letters, and is supported by the Art Directors Guild.
 
WHEN/WHERE:       Eagle-Con will take place at Cal State L.A. for two days:
1.    Thursday, May 8, 1 to 6 p.m., University-Student Union, 3rd floor.
2.    Friday, May 9, 2 to 8 p.m., University-Student Union, 3rd floor.
 
Cal State L.A. is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) freeway, at the interchange of the 10 and 710 freeways. Public permit dispenser parking is available in the upper level of Parking Structure C. For a campus map and directions: www.calstatela.edu/univ/maps/.
 
COST:                        Student, faculty & staff (with ID): $5 for one day, $8 for both days. Public: $10 for one day, $15 for both days.
