Cal State L.A. Presents
Armenian Music Program

What & Who:
The Music Department at Cal State L.A. presents a celebration of Armenian music featuring the works of Loris Ohannes Chobanian. The concert will be performed by the University Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band under the direction of conductors Thomas Verrier, Cal State L.A. assistant professor of Music, and Mr. Chobanian.

When:
Wednesday, March 10, 1999, 8 p.m.

Where:
Cal State L.A. State Playhouse. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Freeway, at the interchange of 10 and 710 Freeways.

Program:
The following will be performed:
I. Hymn to Yerevan by Alan Hovhaness
II. Armenian Dances by Aram Khachaturian
III. Armenian Dances by Alfred Reed
As well as two works by guest composer/conductor Loris Chobanian:
IV. Valley of the Sun
V. Fanfare and Songs of Ararat

Composer:
Loris Ohannes Chobanian is professor of Composition and Guitar as well as composer-in-residence at Baldwin-Wallace College. Born to Armenian parents in Mosul, Iraq, Chobanian was introduced to serious music at an early age by his father, an oil engineer and an amateur musician. At age five he sang an operetta entitled O, Loris (written for him by his father) with an orchestra in Kirkuk. His oeuvre includes compositions for symphony orchestra and wind ensemble, concerti, works for solo voice with orchestra, ballets, pieces for guitar and for guitar ensembles, chamber music, piano pieces, choral works, and works composed especially for children.
