Names Current LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A. interim head cross country/track and field coach Christopher Asher today announced the hiring of current American triple jump record holder Sheila Hudson as an assistant coach for the CSULA menÂs and womenÂs track and field programs. Hudson is one of the most accomplished track and field athletes in U.S. history, having earned USA national outdoor triple jump crowns in 1987, 1989, 1990, 1992, 1994, 1995 and 1998. She is the current owner of the American womenÂs triple jump indoor and outdoor records. Her indoor mark of 46 8 1/4 came at the USA Indoor Championships on March 4, 1995, while her outdoor record of 47 3 1/2 was set in Stockholm on July 8, 1996. That same summer, Hudson finished 10th in the womenÂs triple jump at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. Hudson competed collegiately at California from 1986-90, where she earned six NCAA titles: outdoor triple jump (1987, 1988, 1990); indoor triple jump (1990); indoor long jump (1990); and outdoor long jump (1990). In 1996, she was named the Pac 10Âs womenÂs track and field ÂAthlete of the Decade. She served as an assistant track and field coach at Cal from 1992-94 before pursuing her professional track and field career on a full-time basis. For the past two years (2000-02), she has worked as a staff writer in the Sacramento Bee sports department. Hudson also served stints on the USA Track and Field Board of Directors (1996-2000) and was a horizontal jumps liaison to the USATFÂs Athletics Advisory Committee from 1994-2000. She earned her B.A. in architecture from California in 1990. ÂI am extremely happy and excited to have Sheila Hudson join our coaching staff, said Asher. ÂShe not only brings a proven coaching ability to our program, but also a high level of professionalism in her approach to the sport. There is no question our student-athletes will benefit from her knowledge and ability.Â
