The Harriet and Charles Luckman Fine Arts Gallery, located on the campus of California State University, Los Angeles, announces an exhibition of artworks entitled Post-Millennial Fizzy (Addressing the Possibility of the Future). Featured are recent works by Miriam Dym, Kathleen Johnson, T. Kelly Mason, Dave Muller, Halsey Rodman, Jason Rogenes, Joseph Santarromana, David Schafer, Jennifer Steinkamp, Robert Stone, and Shirley Tse. The exhibition is curated by Julie Joyce and Adam Ross. Exhibition dates are March 11 - May 1, 1999. Gallery hours are Monday thru Thursday and Saturday, 12-5:00pm and admission is free of charge.

While many of us may be thinking of the coming millennium as an end date, Post Millennial Fizzy urges us to focus our attention beyond and into the future. Featuring several of Los Angeles' most promising artists, this exhibition comprises work that offers intriguing, challenging and engaging ideas about what our future may or may not hold.

Post Millennial Fizzy derives its name from a fictional soft drink in the near future novel by acclaimed generation X writer, David Foster Wallace, entitled, Infinite Jest (1995). The setting of Infinite Jest is a post millennial, highly accelerated, consumer-obsessed America whose citizens become addicted to a movie so entertaining that anyone who watches it loses all desire to do anything else. In effect, the author presents us with a future that, although highly advanced in technology, is more complex, obscure and absurd than the present.

Post Millennial Fizzy is an exhibition of art work that considers the possibilities of the future, visually as well as conceptually. The artists represented do not simply picture the future, but make it part of their work through the use of progressive technologies, advanced ideologies, and sometimes even the demystification of both. Many of the artists represented in Post Millennial Fizzy, including Miriam Dym, Kathleen Johnson, Joseph Santarromana, and Jennifer Steinkamp, use some form of computer technology to create their work; while the others--T. Kelly Mason, Dave Muller, Halsey Rodman, Jason Rogenes, David Schafer, Robert Stone and Shirley Tse--investigate and often emulate highly progressive ideas regarding marketing, product design, and consumer lifestyle. Together their works effectively challenge our notions of what the future may hold.

Due in part to the industries as well as attitudes that rise from it, Los Angeles has often been thought of as the place where the future is created. Representing local artists working in a wide range of media, Post Millennial Fizzy looks beyond, farther than some of those who are already contemplating the year 2000 (as well as the problems, such as Y2K, that may come with it). Post Millennial Fizzy proposes some highly imaginative and intriguing notions about what we may soon face in the 21st century.
