Cal State L.A. Earns Third-Straight Bid to
NCAA Volleyball Tournament

 

Golden Eagles will face Western Washington on Thursday in San Bernardino

LOS ANGELES -- The Cal State L.A. women's volleyball team has officially earned its third-straight berth to the NCAA Division II Tournament as the NCAA selection committee announced the 2001 tournament brackets early this evening.

The Golden Eagles are seeded No. 6 in the Pacific Region and will face third-seeded Western Washington at 5 p.m. on Thursday night (November 15). The winner of the CSLA-WWU matchup will face second-seeded UC San Diego at 5 p.m. on Friday night. Cal State, San Bernardino will serve as host for the six-team Regional.

Cal State L.A. enters the Regional 19-10 overall and third in the CCAA at 17-5, just one-half game behind UCSD. The Golden Eagles have won nine-straight matches entering the Regional.

CSLA senior middle blocker Caryn Sale (Mission Viejo, CA/Capo Valley) and junior setter Kristy Sain (Torrance, CA/West) are each playing in their third career NCAA tournament. Sale enters the Regional in an exclusive club, owning career totals of 1,096 kills, 1,000 digs and 418 total blocks. Sain has dished 1,141 assists this season, making her the only player in school history with three seasons of at least 1,000 assists. She ranks second on the all-time CSLA charts with 3,663 assists heading into the NCAA Tournament.

The tournament pairings appear below. CSUSB has indicated the following ticket prices for the Regional: $7 for reserved/chairback seating; $5 adult general admission; and $3 general admission for students with I.D., senior citizens and children 12 and under.

Friday, November 16 -- Regional Semifinals
5 p.m. -- CSLA/WWU winner vs. #2 UC San Diego
7:30 p.m. -- HPU/SPU winner vs. #1 Cal State, San Bernardino

Saturday, November 17 -- Regional Finals
7 p.m. -- winners of Friday's semifinals
