MacArthur Fellow in Physics
to Speak at Cal State L.A. on May 9

What & Who:
MacArthur Fellow Lene Vestergaard Hau, the Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics and Professor of Physics at Harvard University, will speak on the topic, “Light at Bicycle Speed…and Slower Yet!” at California State University, Los Angeles’ 20th Annual Leon Pape Memorial Lecture. The presentation, sponsored by the Cal State L.A. Department of Physics and Astronomy, is free to the public. Reception will be immediately following the lecture at the Roybal Center.

When:
Friday, May 9, 2003, 2 p.m.

Where:
Physical Sciences building, room 158, on the Cal State L.A. campus. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Freeway, at the interchange of 10 and 710 Freeways. Public permit dispenser parking is available in Lots C, F and G or upper level of Parking Structure II.

More:
Dr. Lene Vestergaard Hau, a MacArthur Prize Fellow in Physics, is the Gordon McKay Professor of Applied Physics and Professor of Physics at Harvard University, and a research scientist in condensed matter physics at Harvard’s Lyman Laboratory. She received her B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. from the University of Aarhus, Denmark. Originally trained in theoretical physics, she turned to experimental research in ultra-low temperature phenomena, including a new form of matter known as a Bose-Einstein condensate. In such a condensate, consisting of sodium atoms, her research group recently succeeded in reducing the speed of a light pulse to 17 meters per second.

Info:
The lecture series, honoring the late Leon Pape, a member of the Cal State L.A. Physics Department faculty from 1961 to 1971, brings Nobel Prize winners and distinguished experts in the science field to the campus. For more information, call the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Cal State L.A., (323) 343-2100.
