New Associate Dean Named
for Cal State L.A.'s College of Arts and Letters

Los Angeles, CA -- Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Herman D. Lujan at California State University, Los Angeles has recently announced the appointment of John J. Swain (Arcadia resident) as Associate Dean of the College of Arts and Letters, effective July 1, 2001.

In this capacity, Dr. Swain’s responsibilities include administration of the following activities within the College of Arts and Letters: curriculum, instruction, student affairs, assessment, program review, accreditation, advisement, articulation, public relations and outreach, special programs, orientation programs and classes, and other duties as assigned by the Dean. The associate dean also represents the dean as graduate dean of the College.

Prior to serving as dean, Dr. Swain was interim associate dean for the College since August 1, 2000. Dr. Swain, a professor of Music, has been on the Cal State L.A. faculty since 1984. From 1988 to 1993, he served as chair of the Music Department at Cal State L.A. and previously as associate chair.

A tuba player, Dr. Swain earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in instrumental music education and Master of Music in performance from the University of South Dakota and his Doctor of Philosophy in Music with an emphasis on performance and music theory/literature from Michigan State University.

Dr. Swain is active as a performer, clinician and adjudicator in Southern California. He has composed and arranged numerous pieces for band, brass band and theater ensembles, and has published articles in a variety of music journals. He is the author of The Brass Instruments: A Reference Manual, published by Manduca Music.

Dr. Swain served as chair of the California Council on Music Teacher Education from 1999-2001. He currently serves on the board of directors of the Southern California Judging Association. He is also actively involved with the Gregorian Schola of Los Angeles and the Pasadena Pro Musica.
