Cal State L.A. Presents the
Fall 2001 Independent Visions Film Series

What & Who:
The University-Student Union Cross Cultural Centers Office at California State University, Los Angeles, presents the Independent Visions Series. Edgy, urban, progressive, cultural, educational and entertaining, this weekly series of independent film and video is held on Thursdays at 12 noon and 6 p.m.

Films:
"Resculpting Venus." October 4. Made by a breast cancer survivor, this film uses humor and personal experience to deal with critical issues related to the disease. The filmmaker will lead a discussion following both screenings. Directed by Julianne Buescher, 1998, 20 minutes.

"Indigenous People’s Day." October 11. In defiance of Columbus Day, this event will explore the struggles and stories of indigenous communities from the Americas. The event will feature a screening of the two films, The Couple in the Cage and Columbus on Trial, followed by a discussion with Richard T. Rodriguez, assistant professor of Chicano Studies at Cal State L.A. Columbus on Trial is directed by Lourdes Portillo, 1993, 18 minutes. The Couple in the Cage is directed by Coco Fusco and Paula Heredia, 1993, 30 minutes.

"Viva La Causa!: 500 Years of Chicano History." October 18. Based on the book, 500 Years of Chicano History in Pictures, this two-part video presents a comprehensive history of the Mexican American people. Directed by Elizabeth Martinez, 1995, 60 minutes.

"Roots in the Sand." November 8. This film challenges prevailing impressions of the rugged frontier by enriching the landscape with stalwart Sikh, Muslim and Hindu settlers in a Mexican-Punjabi version of the “Taming of the Wild West.” Directed by Jayasri Majumdar Hart, 1998, 57 minutes.

"Camp Arirang." November 15. For decades, thousands of Korean women have been working as prostitutes for American soldiers. This film explores the lives of these women and their fatherless Amerasian children who live in U.S. camp towns throughout South Korea. Directed by Diana S. Lee and Grace Yoon Kyung Lee, 1995, 28 minutes.

Cal State L.A. Maxwell Theatre, second floor, University-Student Union. The University is located at the Eastern Avenue exit, San Bernardino (I-10) Fwy., at the interchange of 10 and 710 Fwys. (Public permit dispenser parking is available in Lots C and G or upper level of Parking Structure II.)
