 | Cal State L.A.'s Student Named to Los Angeles, CA -- Hacienda Heights resident Patty Patchrint, a senior in Speech Communication at California State University, Los Angeles, was recently named by the American Forensic Association's National Individual Events Tournament to the first annual N.I.E.T. All-American Team. The fourteen student winners of this award demonstrated excellence throughout the year in forensics, academics, and service to the community. "I'm very excited and honored to receive this award for Cal State L.A.," said Patchrint. "The fact that I was named to the very first All-American team makes it that much more rewarding." Maya Staylor, one of the Forensic Squad assistant coaches, commented, "Some people on our campus don't even know about forensics, and yet, here we have one of only fourteen students in the nation to receive this prestigious award. All of Cal State L.A. should be proud of this accomplishment." In order to be a recipient of the award, Patchrint first had to be nominated by Kevin Baaske, Cal State L.A.'s Director of Forensics. "Each program could nominate one graduating senior," said Baaske. "Patchrint was the obvious choice for Cal State L.A." The head coaches of forensic programs in California, Nevada and Hawaii then reviewed the nominations of students from these states. Two names were forwarded to the national selection committee. One student was David Escobedo from Cal State Long Beach; the other was Patchrint. Both Escobedo and Patchrint learned at the national championship tournament that they had passed the final hurdle and had been named to the All-American Team. "The National Individual Events Tournament wanted to create an award that provided recognition to the breadth of student achievements. We know that most of our student competitors are excellent students and contribute significantly to their communities. We wanted to develop an award that could be given annually to a select few in recognition of their extraordinary accomplishments in these areas. The All-American Team was the result," said Baaske. "Patty is a wonderful student and has been a very successful competitor. I am very pleased that she was given this amazing honor. It is truly a remarkable achievement for Cal State L.A." The Cal State L.A. Forensics Squad competes in eleven individual events and debate. It is housed in the Department of Communication Studies and supported by the College of Arts and Letters, student Instructionally Related Activities fees, Associated Students, and the Cal State L.A. administration.
