 | Cal State L.A. Names David Rider as LOS ANGELES -- Cal State L.A. interim head cross country/track and field coach Christopher Asher announced today the hiring of David Rider as assistant coach for the Golden Eagles men's and women's track and field programs. Rider will specifically work with the throwing events. "David Rider is a proven throws coach on a national level," said Asher, "and our athletes will undoubtedly reap the benefits of his knowledge when it comes to athletic performance." This is Rider's second stint as a track and field coach at Cal State L.A., having previously served during the 1987-88 season, when the Cal State L.A. men's track and field team earned fifth place at the NCAA Championships. Rider also served as throws coach at Glendale Community College from 1982-87, where he produced one state champion, five Southern California champions, 22 state meet qualifiers, 18 state meet finalists, 18 conference champions and five school record-holders, as well as six men's team conference championships in six years. One of those individuals, Donna Mayhew, was a five-time national champion in the javelin. Mayhew also won the U.S. Olympic trials in 1988 and 1992, followed by a sixth-place showing at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and 12th place at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games. Rider moved to Crescenta Valley High School in 1987, where he coached Nada Kawar, who went on to participate in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games for her native country of Jordan. Rider competed collegiately in the javelin at Long Beach State during the 1981-82 season, placing third in the conference meet with a top mark of 232-2. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education from Long Beach State in 1984.
