The Fine Arts Gallery at California State University, Los Angeles presents an art exhibition entitled, "The Right To Assemble," featuring works by artists Anthony Askew, Pat Cox, Joel E. David, Judi Donin, Ursula M. Kammer-Fox, Frank Gutierrez, Sylvia Glass, Cecilia Miguez, Franklyn Liegel, John Outterbridge, Susan Tibble, Rufus Snoddy, Eva Kolosvary-Stupler, Joan Vaupen, Timothy Washington, William Roper, and Loraine Veeck. Assemblage is the three-dimensional counterpart of collage. The origin of assemblage can be traced to 1913 with Pablo Picasso and George Braque. Assemblage involves the transformation of non-art objects and materials into sculpture. The artist constructs the assemblage through the use of combining or constructing techniques such as gluing, nailing or welding. This radically new way of making sculpture revolutionized the traditional practices of carving stone or modeling a cast that would be transformed into a bronze sculpture. Assemblage incorporates the use of non-art elements such as found objects and junk to define the sculpture with an appealing rawness and mystical poetic qualities. Info:
