Cal State L.A. to Hold
28th Annual Alumni Awards Gala

On Thursday, October 18, 2001, California State University, Los Angeles will celebrate the outstanding contributions of its alumni and students to their professions, communities and the University, at the 28th Cal State L.A. Annual Alumni Awards Gala.

This year, the University will be honoring Los Angeles Fire Chief William R. Bamattre ’86 with the Alumnus of the Year Award. Bamattre is an ardent proponent of community-based public safety and is affiliated with several professional and community organizations including the National Fire Protection Association, International Association of Fire Chiefs, March of Dimes and the Children’s Burn Foundation. He and his wife Liz were jointly honored by the Dana Point Chamber of Commerce as “Outstanding Citizens of the Year” after he served as the city’s Mayor in 1991. Bamattre obtained his master’s degree in public administration at Cal State L.A. in 1986 and his degree in political science from Stanford University in 1974.

Kenneth Inouye, C.P.A., this year’s University Service Award recipient, is the managing partner of Inouye, Shively & Longtin, Certified Public Accountants. While at Cal State L.A., Inouye served as the president of Beta Alpha Psi, the national honorary accounting fraternity, and was a member of the student advisory board for the College of Business and Economics. Inouye is a member of Cal State L.A.’s Department of Accounting advisory board and is the chair of the Orange County Human Relations Commission. He also serves on the Orange County Japanese American Association and is active in the Go For Broke Educational Foundation. Inouye earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Cal State L.A. in 1968.

Michael W. Roffe ’65 will be presented the Distinguished Faculty Alumnus Award. Dr. Roffe began his teaching career at Cal State L.A. in 1970 and has held numerous departmental administrative positions as the assistant director of the Psychology Clinic, coordinator of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program, and chair of the department since 1995. He has been elected the faculty representative on the Alumni Association board of directors and is active in institutional advancement at the University. Roffe earned his M.A. in psychology from Cal State L.A. in 1965. He received his bachelor’s degree in psychology from UCLA in 1963 and his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Portland in 1970.

From Cal State L.A.’s six Colleges, the Alumni Association will pay tribute to Giselle Acevedo-Franco, M.A., ’83 (special education, Charter College of Education), vice president of public affairs at the Los Angeles Times; Charles P. Bluth, B.S., ’64 (marketing and accounting, College of Business & Economics), owner, president and CEO of Bluth Enterprises; Cliff DeYoung, B.A., ’68 (theatre arts, College of Arts and Letters), actor; Lynn Paul Reitnouer, M.A., ’59 (physical education, College of Health and Human Services), partner of the stock brokerage firm, Crowell, Weedon & Co.; Edgar E. Vivanco, B.A., ’68, M.S., ’72 (microbiology, College of Natural and Social Sciences), president of the specialty testing division, corporate manufacturing and quality at Beckman Coulter, Inc.; and Nabih Youssef, M.S., ’71 (civil engineering, College of Engineering, Computer Science, and Technology), president and principal of Nabih Youssef & Associates.

The Outstanding Graduate Student Award will be presented to Lisa K. Chan, M.A. ’99, child development, M.A., ’02, special education (Charter College of Education), and Sarah Elizabeth Williams, B.A. candidate, ’02 (radio and television broadcasting, College of Arts and Letters), will receive the Outstanding Senior Award.

The public is invited to this memorable occasion honoring these inspiring students and leaders on Thursday, October 18, 2001 at the Luckman Fine Arts Complex. Guests will enjoy a lavish dinner, entertainment, and an Academy Awards-style presentation.
