The Luckman Presents
Lulu Washington Dance Theatre
Kwanzaa Celebration 2002

LOS ANGELES – The Harriet & Charles Luckman Fine Arts Complex will present Lula Washington Dance Theatre’s sixth annual Kwanzaa Celebration 2002 concert in the Luckman Theatre, Cal State L.A., on Monday, December 30, 2002 at 8:00 p.m.

The concert will take place during Kwanzaa with African-based dances by Washington’s nationally renowned dance company. The program will include exciting modern and African dance; fantastic drumming and uplifting gospel singing. A featured modern dance piece will be “Angels of Peace,” set to the music of “Winter” composed by George Winston. Washington’s Youth Dance Ensemble and adult company will collaborate in a piece entitled “Harambe,” a traditional African suite that illustrates the seven principles of Kwanzaa. Other dances will be set to the South African music of “Sueto.” More special guests and performances are to be announced.

For the sixth year Washington has succeeded in her plan to incorporate “Kwanzaa Celebration 2002” into Los Angeles’s annual community celebration. Kwanzaa is a week of observance based around seven family principles – one for each day of the week. The holiday begins the day after Christmas and runs through New Year’s Day. The seven Kwanzaa principles are unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
