Cal State L.A. Financial Aid offers free workshops; priority deadline March 2
Los Angeles, CA – Jan. 14, 2010 -- For the thousands of Cal State L.A. students who receive governmental financial aid, or would like to, the first step is the FAFSA – the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. To assist students in completing the FAFSA, Cal State L.A.’s Student Financial Aid Office will offer a free one-hour workshop to be presented in Student Affairs Room 110 at the following times:
- Wednesday, Jan. 20, at 4 p.m.
- Wednesday, Feb. 3, at 11 a.m.
- Thursday, Feb. 8, at 3:30 p.m.
- Monday, March 1, at 9 a.m. and again at 5 p.m.
A FAFSA is required when applying for grants, loans and federal work-study. For example, in California, students must file the FAFSA by March 2, in order to be considered for a Cal Grant from the California Student Aid Commission.
Cal State L.A.’s Student Financial Aid Office helps students obtain assistance through several types of programs:
- grants, which do not need to be paid back;
- loans, which are federally funded, often based on need, and must be paid back;
- federal work-study, a program that provides job opportunities—thus income—to students with the highest financial need; and
- scholarships, gifts of support that do not have to be repaid.
About 70 percent of Cal State L.A.’s nearly 20,000 students receive some sort of governmental financial aid. Combined, they receive about $118 million.
The Cal State L.A. Student Financial Aid Office, located in Student Affairs 124, is open Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Fridays, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Its phone is (323) 343-6260.
