A Golden Eagle Icon

Billie Jean King has been a trailblazer for women's tennis and sports. She has been and continues to be an advocate for gender equality and a pioneer for social justice. Regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, Billie Jean King was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1987. For her tireless advocacy work for women and the LGBTQ community, she was awarded in 2009 the United States' highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, by President Barack Obama.
Cal State LA is honored to call Billie Jean King an alumna and a friend. In 1997, during the University's year-long 50th anniversary celebration, Billie Jean King received the California State University/California State University, Los Angeles honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters in recognition of her many achievements in the world arena of athletics and for the distinction those accomplishments have brought to her alma mater.
This year, Cal State LA celebrates Billie Jean King's continued support and connection to the university with a statue dedication. The statue honors her legacy and serves as an inspiration to the campus community.
