Dr. Deborah R. Vargas (UC Riverside), author Dissonant Divas in Chicana Music: The Limits of La Onda, will be offering a keynote address for the Center for the Studies of Genders and Sexualities Student Research and Creative Arts Conference. In her talk, Dr. Vargas will be discussing her new project articulating a queer feminist framework of “brown soul” in order to speak to the relations between Chicanidad and the African diasporic sounds and aesthetics of performers such as Gloria Ríos, Mexican girl groups in the mid-twentieth century, Linda Ronstadt, and Martha Gonzalez, among others.
