The Pan-African Studies Department, along with the Cross Cultural Centers and The TVF department, are excited to present a screening and discussion with the legendary Billy Woodberry.

Billy Woodberry is one of the leading directors of the L.A. Rebellion (also known as the Los Angeles School of Black Filmmakers or the UCLA Rebellion, refers to the new generation of young African and African American filmmakers who studied at the UCLA Film School in the late-1960s to the late-1980s and have created a Black Cinema that provides an alternative to classical Hollywood cinema. Additional filmmakers in this movement are: Julie Dash, Charles Burnett, Zeinabu Irene Davis, and Haile Gerima.

*Billy Woodberry long-awaited new film And When I Die I Won’t Stay Dead, a feature-length documentary about jazz-inspired beat poet Bob Kaufman, sometimes called the “American Rimbaud." Woodberry’s landmark 1984 film Bless Their Little Hearts was honored with a jury award at the Berlin International Film Festival and was selected for preservation by the National Film Registry.
