Cal State LA’s Art History Society presents the 2024 Mesoamerican Symposium on “Modern Pillars of Mesoamerica.” The symposium will feature prominent scholars of ancient Mesoamerica who will speak on a range of topics, such as Mesoamerican flutes, Olmec art, Mexican angels, Zapotec tomb rituals, and more.
This free event is organized as a homage to Mary Miller, Frances F. Berdan, and Davíd Carrasco. Mary Miller is a distinguished Mayanist who taught at Yale University and now is the director of the Getty Research Institute. Frances Berdan is an archaeologist, emeritus professor at CSU San Bernardino and author of a superb edition of The Codex Mendoza. Davíd Carrasco is a historian of religion at Harvard University and author of seminal books on the history of Aztec and Mesoamerican religion.
As part of the symposium, an exhibition of books featuring Maya and Aztec art will be on display in the Special Collections and Archives reading room of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Library at Cal State LA. For event reservation and additional information, please visit the symposium website.
