Resident Assistant (RA) and Community Mentor (CM)

RA and CM roles will open December 11, 2023 and close February 11, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

Scope of Function

The primary responsibility of the Resident Assistant (RA) is to build community amongst the residents of Housing and Residence Life. Community building is accomplished through programs, social interaction, and enforcing community standards established by Housing and Residence Life and by the residents in the community.

Appointment

The appointment is for the period of Monday, July 29, 2024, through Wednesday, May 14, 2025

Benefits

  • Single room in a furnished apartment or residential hall with utilities included.
  • Meal plan (Meals are not provided during university closures, holidays, or any day the Meal Plan is not active).

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum GPA:
    • Undergraduate - 2.0 | Graduate - 3.0
  • Minimum # of Class Units: 6 Units (undergraduate and graduate students).
  • Minimum Years at CalStateLA: 1 Academic Year by time of Appointment (meaning, 1 Academic Year by August 2024, regardless of class standing).
  • Completed Application: Submit a complete Application by the above deadlines. The application includes multiple free-response questions and a request to upload a resume attachment.

Position Requirements

  • Live Scan (finger printing) clearance prior to being hired.
  • Must be available to work weekdays, nights, weekends, holidays, and when school is not in session (such as winter break and spring break) for on-call duties and other special events throughout the appointment.
  • Requires a $100 security deposit for the housing application. This is refundable pending apartment/room inspection after the staff member moves out of the assigned space.
  • Be in Good Academic, Financial, and Judicial standing with Housing & Residence Life.
  • Possible additional requirements based on the health and safety requirements due to COVID-19 at time of and throughout term of hire.

Attendance

  • RAs must be available for the following required meetings:
    • Weekly RA staff meeting (Fridays from 2-4 p.m.)
    • One-on-one meetings with supervisor/Residence Life Coordinator
    • Committee meetings (as assigned)
  • RAs must fully participate in all scheduled training activities and major Housing and Residence Life events, whether offered in person or virtually. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Apartment Tours – using RA apartments as showrooms
  • Regular In-Services and Weekly Staff Meetings on Fridays 2 – 4 p.m.

Responsibilities and Job Duties

Community Development

  • Plan, execute, and assess department-wide social and educational programs in consultation with fellow RAs and PAs.
  • Fulfill programming requirements as set forth in the Programming Model and by the department. Initiate, plan, implement, and assess programs according to expectations.
  • Assist in the coordination of student transition and orientation during opening meetings, town hall meetings, and Welcome Weekend.
  • Participate in department and University initiatives.
  • Promote community-wide and department-wide programs to residents in all residential communities.
  • Collaborate with career staff and fellow student staff to create programs or initiatives for communities based on assessed needs.
  • Participate and present at Central Student Leadership Drive-In conference.
  • Serve as content experts in coordination of programs and activities for staff and residents as a Programming Board.
  • Address needs of students and guests, including those in quarantine and isolation, including but not limited to meal deliveries, package deliveries, and virtual wellness checks.

 

Policy Enforcement

  • Enforce system, University, Housing, and county policies and public health guidance
  • Perform duty as scheduled:
  • Monday – Sunday
  • Perform duty hours, as scheduled. Duty shifts are scheduled on a rotational basis (including weekends, holidays, and other campus closures) and serves as point persons in emergency situations. Duty shifts are based upon operational needs.
  • RAs may be asked to assist as available in emergency situations.
  • Assist in enforcing University and Housing and Residence Life Policies, as well as Federal and California State Laws. This includes computing guidelines, confidentiality, alcohol policies, and FERPA compliance. RAs must also comply with these policies and guidelines.
  • Respond to behavioral issues and policy infractions that occur within the Housing community.
  • Assist with crisis intervention and emergency response when needed by utilizing training and adhering to Housing and Residence Life protocol.
  • Responsible for possession of duty items and supplies (Duty Binder, Cell Phone, Cell Phone Charger, iPad, and Master Keys).
  • Assist with mediating conflicts within the community.
  • Assist with the education and enforcement of Health and Safety guidelines provided by the University and Los Angeles Health Department.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Complete apartment Fire, Health, and Safety Inspections and Occupancy Reports in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Perform all administrative duties as assigned (weekly reports, duty logs, programming paperwork, roommate agreements).
  • Keep supervisor informed of resident issues.
  • Monitor phone messages, email, and mailbox regularly for communication.
  • Complete Office Hours as scheduled to assist with Housing and Residence Life administrative operations as needed. Office Hours will be scheduled each week with the exception of Finals Week each semester, Thanksgiving break, winter break or University holidays.

 

Ethics, Timeliness, and Confidentiality

  • RAs are always expected to maintain a high standard of ethics, including honoring, and following University and Housing and Residence Life Policies as well as student conduct expectations. RAs must be in good judicial standing with Housing and Residence Life and the University Judicial Affairs Office prior to and throughout the term of position.
  • RAs are expected to abide by the health and safety policies and practices put into place by the University and Los Angeles Department of Public Health.
  • RAs are expected to meet deadlines as given by supervisors and be timely with sensitive important information.
  • RAs must maintain the security and confidentiality of both personal and institutional records and information as outlined by FERPA, the Appropriate Use Agreement for Student Assistants, the Acknowledgement of Mandated Reporter Status, the federal Clery Act, and any other applicable University policy.

Inclusion.) by providing programming and community engagement activities. CMs will also work as a team to develop, plan, promote, and execute department-wide initiatives and programs that help to enhance the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion experience for residents.

Appointment

The appointment is for the period of July 29, 2023, at Noon through the closing of the residential facilities on Saturday, May 25, 2024. CMs must check out of their designated apartments no later than noon on Saturday, May 25, 2024. The appointment is contingent upon completion of assigned tasks and performance evaluation. Area assignment is dependent upon department need and is subject to change.

  • CMs must be enrolled as full-time students (minimum of 12 units undergrad, 8 units grad) at Cal State LA, each semester. The offer to serve as a Community Mentor will be rescinded if this is not maintained.

  • Students must be in good standing with the University and with Housing and Residence Life. Candidates must not currently be on disciplinary probation or have a concerning disciplinary record.

Responsibilities and Job Duties

Community Development

  • Plan, execute, and assess department-wide social Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Programming.

  • Work with specific Themed Community for GIH, Halisi, Nuestra Casa, and J.E.D.I to develop floor programs, monthly newsletters, and activities related to that floor’s theme.

  • Participate in department and University initiatives.

  • Facilitate monthly tabling within residential community regarding cultural celebrations, education, and recognition.

  • Collaborate with career staff to identify and facilitate semesterly training opportunities for all residents from a Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion lens.

  • Participate and present at Central Student Leadership Drive-In conference.

  • Serve as content experts in coordination of programs and activities for staff and residents as a Programming Board for Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.

  • Design social media and residential campaigns focused on information on Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion concepts

  • Perform duty as scheduled:

Responsibilities and Job Duties

Community Development

  • Program Assistants are expected to fulfill programming requirements, including complex-wide programming assignments, as detailed in Fall Training, Meetings, and the PA Manual.
  • Program Assistants interact and build relationships with residents by developing, advertising, and implementing large scale programming in each community and across communities.
  • PAs will build and strengthen relationships with campus partners to develop complex wide large- scale programs across communities in Housing and Residence Life.
  • Provide assistance and resources for all communities in Housing and Residence life by providing campus resources through complex-wide large-scale programming.
  • Mediate conflicts within the community while on duty and during programs.
  • Maintain regular Office Hours for students each week (post 3 hours per week). Office Hours should be scheduled each week of employment volunteering except for Finals Week each semester and weeks when the University is closed.
  • PAs should monitor their email accounts and respond promptly to resident and Residence Life staff issues. A 24-hour response is expected.
  • Address needs of students and guests, including those in quarantine and isolation, including but not limited to meal deliveries, package deliveries, and virtual wellness checks.

  • Complete Office Hours as scheduled to assist with Housing and Residence Life administrative operations as needed. Office Hours will be scheduled each week with the exception of Finals Week each semester, Thanksgiving break, winter break or University holidays.

 

Ethics, Timeliness, and Confidentiality

  • RAs are always expected to maintain a high standard of ethics, including honoring, and following University and Housing and Residence Life Policies as well as student conduct expectations. RAs must be in good judicial standing with Housing and Residence Life and the University Judicial Affairs Office prior to and throughout the term of position.
  • RAs are expected to abide by the health and safety policies and practices put into place by the University and Los Angeles Department of Public Health.
  • RAs are expected to meet deadlines as given by supervisors and be timely with sensitive important information.
  • RAs must maintain the security and confidentiality of both personal and institutional records and information as outlined by FERPA, the Appropriate Use Agreement for Student Assistants, the Acknowledgement of Mandated Reporter Status, the federal Clery Act, and any other applicable University policy.
