| Pan-African Studies offers an undergraduate program of
study leading to the Bachelor of Arts degree in African American
Studies. Established as a program in 1967, the Pan-African Studies
Department at Cal State, LA is one of oldest in the State University
system. Pan African Studies is devoted to research, teaching, and
programs relevant to understanding people of African descent -- both
on
the African continent and in the African Diaspora. The PAS curriculum seeks to combine
in-depth and transnational approaches
to the study of the black experience in order to give students a
unique foundation for critical thinking and social
analysis.
The Pan-African Studies degree provides preparation for careers
in teaching, community development and leadership, international
affairs, non-governmental organizations, public relations, social
work, urban research, law, civil service, industrial relations and
comparable professions. Students who elect the major will be equipped for
graduate work in PAS and related fields, including African Studies, as well as for more traditional
disciplines grounded in a general knowledge of the social sciences
and humanities.
The campus' John F. Kennedy Memorial Library
maintains books, periodicals, newspapers, government and community
publications, pamphlets, theses, audio-visual, internet, and other resources about Africa,
African American
history and heritage as well as on people of African descent
worldwide. This collection provides students who are enrolled in Pan-African
Studies' courses access to materials covering a full range of relevant
topics.
Pan-African Studies majors may join
the campus chapters of Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi national honor
societies which are open to qualified students in all academic disciplines.
In addition, numerous scholarships are available to students in all
disciplines who meet established criteria.
