Parent Academy

Welcome to Cal State LA’s Parent Academy. Originally developed by Dr. Alfredo Gonzalez, Parent Academy was launched in fall 2013. This program is designed to help the parents of first-time freshmen college students:

  • Develop a better understanding about what their student will experience in college
  • Learn what it takes for students to be successful
  • Meet and talk with other parents, current staff members, and professors

Parent Academy is FREE, but a reservation is required to participate. While we do welcome multiple parents/family support members to attend, we strongly encourage guests to arrange childcare beforehand.

Year 1
The first year of Parent Academy is divided into three sessions taking place throughout the academic year. Some of our workshop topics include successfully transitioning to college life, student mental health and financial aid. Parents who attend all three sessions are presented with a Certificate of Completion during the final program and become Parent Academy Alumni!

Year 2+
In order to extend the relationship between the University and you as parents and family support members, New Student and Family Programs developed additional academic workshops for parents of continuing students (students in their second year and beyond, or “2+”). We are pleased to welcome our Parent Academy Alumni (parents who have completed the first year of Parent Academy) to continue gaining helpful information and resources. Parent Academy Alumni will receive an invitation to Year 2+ by email. There are at least two sessions per academic year for this program.
