M.A. Admissions

Admissions Process

Admission to the MA Program involves two steps: 1) Admission to CSULA, and 2) Admission to the Political Science Department.  Admission into the university does not guarantee or imply admission into the department. The Department of Political Science and the University have different criteria and separate processes for admissions. Pay particular attention to the filing periods and application deadlines for both CSU Mentor and the Department.

Note: The department will be accepting applications for the Spring 2017 semester. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS OCTOBER 1, 2016.
For the Fall 2017 semester, the application deadline is April 14, 2017.

The pdfCSULA Graduate Student Handbook also provides a useful overview of the university admissions process, financial aid, and other aspects of graduate study at the university.

Step One: Admission to CSULA using CSU Mentor

Applicants should complete the online application for graduate students available at CSU Mentor.  International student applicants should use the International Admission Application on CSU Mentor.

Step Two: Admission to the Political Science Department based on Written Application

Applicants must print out and complete the Political Science MA Application (in MS Word or PDF), and return it by mail to:

California State University, Los Angeles
Department of Political Science, E&T Bldg. A524
Master of Arts Program in Political Science
5151 State University Drive
Los Angeles, CA 90032-8226
Attention: Graduate Coordinator

Note that the Department Application requires the following:

  • Completion of all sections of the written form
  • Mailing of undergraduate transcripts to the Department
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • A statement of purpose
  • Inclusion of a writing sample is highly recommended, but not required.

Applicants to the program must have a B (3.0) grade point average in the last 90 quarter units attempted, either at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Conditional Admission: Applicants who have not completed an undergraduate major in Political Science and/or whose grade point average is below that required for regular admission may be admitted at the discretion of the Department’s Graduate Admissions Committee, but only after completing a minimum of four prerequisite courses at CSULA. Prerequisite courses must be chosen in consultation with and approved by the MA advisor. In general, though, all 3000-level “Foundation” courses and most 4000-level courses (except public administration courses) will satisfy the prerequisite requirement. A grade point average of 3.0 or above is required for the four prerequisite courses in order to be considered for admission into the MA program. (If the GPA requirement is not met, additional courses may be required, but applicants may also be denied admission.) Note that prerequisite courses are considered part of the admissions process, and as such will not count towards the 30.0 units required for completion of the MA program.
