CENTRAL AMERICAN FAMILIES: NETWORKS AND CULTURAL RESISTANCE Exhibition at J.F.K. Memorial Library
Central American Families: Networks and Cultural Resistance is a site-specific art installation exploring the contributions of Central American families as activists, artists, feminists, transactivists, students and intellectuals. The exhibition/installation utilizes visual and material culture from diverse archives including the Central American Memoria Historica Archive, Special Collections and Archives, JFK Library, at Cal State LA and runs from November 15, 2018 through February 15, 2019. Curators: Leda Ramos, M.F.A., Chicana(o) and Latina(o) Studies and Alejandra Lemus-Perez, B.A. Latin American Studies, Cal State LA.

For most, the 'Family' is where we learn to love, play, and build community. Within this contested space, we learn to be 'boys' and 'girls', to assume traditional "family values" and roles, to accept hierarchies within and outside the home, and to love. Today, the family is both the organizing unit by which many movements have structured relationships, as well as the target of xenophobic assault on migrating families.
Join Indigenous/Chicanx/Latinx activists from the community and academia for a critical circle dialogue about the historical conceptualization of the Family within diverse movement-building efforts, with a particular emphasis on Love as the foundational catalyst for change. Using dialogue and performance with students, Grammy-winning Quetzal Flores and Mexican-born Australian rapper and songwriter Maya Jupiter explore Chicanx/Latinx studies as a radical and transformative space for social justice work.
This international conference consists of lectures and panel presentations by distinguished scholars from Mexico and the United States on the art, lives and times of Mexican mural masters Orozco, Rivera, and Siqueiros. The conference addresses the work of these muralists from different perspectives, including aesthetics, biography and the utopian ideals that defined the artistic and political scope of Mexican muralism in the 20th century. Join Dr. José Anguiano, Dept. of Chicana/o Studies & Latina/o Studies and The Honors College, to explore the transnational dialog created through Chicana/o music and sound culture. Free screening of Our Man in Tokyo, a documentary about Shin Miyata, a Tokyo-based record label owner who distributes Chicano music throughout Japan. Followed by a live performance by El Haru Kuroi, an East Los Angeles trio featured in the documentary and a Q&A with director Akira Boch and other special guests.
