ABSN Program: Student Melody Henderson

Melody Henderson Receives NURSE Corps Scholarship

Melody Henderson, a Cal State LA Student in PaGE's ABSN (Accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing) Program is the recipient of a NURSE Corps Scholarship from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services' Health Resources & Services Administration. This is the first time a PaGE student has received this honor. The NURSE Corps Scholarship Program will provide Melody with full financial support, including tuition and other school-related expenses during the 2016/17 academic year. These funds will enable Melody to fulfill her passion to provide care to underserved people in the neediest communities across the country.

Melody came to Cal State LA with an interest in becoming a registered nurse, and the desire to explore several different types of nursing including public health, emergency medicine, rehabilitation nursing, disaster relief and nursing education. She also hopes to combine her nursing skills with health education so that patients can take ownership of their health and gain access to the resources that they need.

"While volunteering during college with the homeless population at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverside (CA), I noticed medical care vans offering free services available to homeless people," said Melody. "It was then that I decided that I wanted to work in a similar setting with a similar population. I am committed to becoming a skilled and compassionate nurse because I feel that people need to learn more about their health and how to prevent disease to live better lives."
