Program Description:

Offered at Cal State LA Downtown, the Medical Billing and Coding Program is an 80-hour billing and coding course that offers the skills needed to resolve insurance billing problems, manually file claims (using the CPT and ICD-10 manual), complete common insurance forms, trace delinquent claims, appeal denied claims and use generic forms to streamline billing procedures. 

After obtaining practical work experience (six months to two years), students who complete this course may be qualified to sit for the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) – Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam; or other National Certification Exams.

Who Should Enroll?

  • Students interested in keeping records, calculating patient charges and review files 
  • Individuals interested in being Medical Coders that determine codes for physician procedures and diagnosis using ICD-10 and CPT-4 coding protocols for third party billing purposes
  • Students with a high school diploma or GED equivalent

The Instructor

The program instructor is a Certified Professional Coder in the field and is familiar with the requirements of the American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC)-Certified Professional Coder Exam (CPC or CPC-H Apprentice); the American Health Information Association (AHIMA) – Certified Coding Associate (CCA) exam.
