Major Specific Declaration Requirements

Major Specific Declaration Requirements for Cal State LA Students

All students must have a declared major by the time they reach 60 earned units. This applies equally to students who are:

  • Undeclared
  • Have been admitted into a ‘pre–major’ and are requesting to declare the major
  • Requesting to change major
  • Requesting to add a major
While freshmen are admitted directly into some majors, many majors require that students begin as pre–majors and then declare the major if and when they complete the major specific criteria. Except for Nursing, native Cal State LA students can ‘declare a major’ if they meet the major specific minimum cumulative GPA and complete the required lower division preparation courses. To review the detailed major specific declaration requirements, select the name of the appropriate major. Be aware that these criteria are subject to change in the future.

It is expected that students will complete study toward their baccalaureate degree in no more than 120% (144 units for a standard 120–unit program) of the units required by their primary degree program, including a second major or any minors. There may be additional limits on the ability to add a second major or to add/change degree objectives. See Making Sufficient Progress in the Major.

Be Aware: Pre–Nursing students who receive less than B in any of the Pre-requisite courses will be changed to “Undeclared with an interest in Health Professions” and will need to explore other major options.

By Beginning

of the Third Semester

Start of the Nursing program IF admitted or a different major if NOT admitted or continuing pre-requisite completion to apply to Nursing with advisor approval

Note: If a student has not been able to follow this timeline due to extenuating circumstances they will be still be able to apply to the Nursing program once pre-requisites are met. However, once a student has reached 60 units they must meet with an advisor.

NOTE:

PSY 1500

SOC 2010

and NTRS 3510

Are not pre-requisites but are part of the major/university requirements

See Pre-Nursing roadmap

Eligible Pre–Nursing applicants must submit a program application to the Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing . To be considered for admission to the major, applicants must meet the minimum requirements indicated above. Applicants meeting this minimum criterion will be ranked for admission based on a rubric which includes their cumulative GPA, their GPA in Prerequisite courses, the results of the TEAS, their Military status, Cal State LA Local Preference status, health–care employment or volunteer experience. The number of applicants who can be admitted is severely limited by space availability. Please consult the Patricia A. Chin School of Nursing for additional information.

Pre–Nursing students who meet the minimum application requirements for the BSN program but who are not offered admission will be offered admission to the Public Health program. These students are also free to explore other major options at that time.

Be Aware: Students can only apply once to the Cal State LA nursing program and must either be a Cal State LA Pre–Nursing student or a new transfer applicant. Students admitted to a major other than Nursing, will not be able to change their major to Nursing during their tenure at Cal State LA.
