University Convocation – which launches the new academic year at California State University, Los Angeles – took place from 9-10 a.m. Sept. 22, 2014 in the Luckman Theatre. A reception was held in the Luckman Street of the Arts prior to Convocation, from 7:30-8:30 a.m.
University Convocation is a new tradition at Cal State L.A., beginning in 2013 to coincide with President Covino’s first official address to the university. This year, the program included remarks from the president and from several distinguished guests.
Universities have held convocations since the Middle Ages in order to welcome students into the community of scholars which will teach them. Literally a “calling together,” Fall Convocation assembles all groups of the University community: alumni, students, faculty, staff, deans, administrators and the president.
