Proyecto Ulama 2003
Sinaloa, Mexico – 2003 - 2004
Proyecto Ulama is a multidisciplinary research program carried out by the Departments of Art and Anthropology to give Cal State, L.A. students the opportunity to conduct professional research outside of the United States. Five students participated in the investigation of Ulama, a survival of Ulamaliztli, the ballgame played by the ancient Aztecs. The research, directed by Dr. Manuel Aguilar and Dr. James Brady, involved observing games and interviewing players in a number of small towns in Sinaloa, Mexico where it is still played. The students explored a wide-range of questions looking for insights into the meaning and importance of the ballgame to Pre-Columbian civilizations. Among the topics considered were the placement of the taste (from the Aztec word tlachtli for ballcourt) within the social landscape, the scale of production of rubber (Aztec: ulli, hence the Spanish: hule) and the role of women in the game.
