Writing Center Services
The University Writing Center provides writing tutoring for all Cal State LA courses, from first-year introductory courses to graduate seminars. When you come to the University Writing Center, you will find tutors who excel in helping you identify effective writing strategies tailored to your individual needs and level of experience in writing. You can come in with any type of writing assignment at any stage of the writing process.
We encourage you to come in early in the semester since a little guidance can save you a great deal of time and effort, whether you need help understanding or getting started on an assignment, need feedback on a draft, or seek to improve the force and effectiveness of your writing. We can help you start and organize your essays, clarify your ideas, and revise your paper.
While we are not a proofreading or error-correction service, we can help you learn to become a better proofreader and editor yourself. During a 30-minute tutoring session, we can work with you on identifying and correcting errors and help you develop strategies for effectively presenting your ideas. Our emphasis is on helping you become a better writer, so we want to help you learn to revise and edit your own work. We are strongly focused on the long-term development of individual writers rather than quick fixes for the paper at hand.
While you can drop in for tutoring, the best way to get one-to-one feedback is to make an appointment. The process is on our Tutoring Services page. In addition to one-to-one tutoring for students, we also offer support for the WPE.
Student Research Consultants
Library research assistance is available in Library-North to help students get started with their research, narrow topics, develop search strategies, find and evaluate different types of library resources, etc. A student research consultant may also help students with formatting and documentation, using APA, MLA, and other styles.
Student research consultants will not be working during the summer sessions, but librarians will be on-call Mon-Thurs 12-5 and Fri 12-4 to help with research and citation questions. No appointment is necessary--just inquire at the service desk on the first floor of Library-North. For more in-depth research help, plese contact the subject specialist librarian for your department http://web.calstatela.edu/library/dlc.htm
