Elementary Subject Matter
Teacher Preparation Options in Liberal Studies
Option II. Elementary Subject Matter Teacher Preparation Option
Advantages: Most complete set of required courses to prepare for the California Subject Examination for Teachers; B.A. is completed within 180 units; may substitute teach while completing credential coursework.
Disadvantages: Less flexibility; more rigid ESM requirements in GE.
Option III. Blended Elementary Subject Matter Teacher Preparation Option
Advantages: Financial Aid will cover credential courses; B.A. degree and credential are completed at the same time with fewer units than non-blended programs (204-206 versus 225); eligible for employment sooner.
Disadvantages: None of the units are post-baccalaureate and therefore do not count toward salary increase in district formulas; may not substitute teach while pursuing credential coursework; must complete additional units to receive salary increase in districts (249 versus 225).
Option IV. Elementary Subject Matter Teacher Preparation: Directed Electives Option
Advantages: Utilizes traditional GE requirements; allows students to select CSET preparation coursework specifically tailored to their needs; may be used to prepare two depth areas for grades 5-6 in elementary schools where teachers focus on two subjects; may be used to prepare for dual multiple and single subject credentials by developing expertise in a single subject in order to pass the CSET in both Multiple Subject and Single Subject areas; may substitute teach while completing credential coursework.
Disadvantages: Does not require the comprehensive set of CSET preparation courses recommended by the CCTC.
