Works of artist and Cal State L.A. alumnus Mark Steven Greenfield on exhibit at California African American Museum

Opening reception set for Sept. 28

What: The California African American Museum is pleased to present the solo exhibition, “Lookin’ Back in Front of Me,” which features selected works of artist Mark Steven Greenfield, former director of the Watts Towers Arts Center and Los Angeles Municipal Art Gallery.

Who:  Greenfield graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Cal State L.A. in 1987 and his paintings and drawings have been exhibited across the United States and in Europe and Asia. Much of his work has focused on the African American experience and has been credited with helping promote dialogue on issues of race and equality. When:  Sunday, Sept. 28, 2 p.m. – opening reception. (Exhibition runs from Sept. 25, 2014, to Apr. 5, 2015, and is free to the public.)

More:  “Lookin’ Back in Front of Me” marks the first time Greenfield’s work can be viewed in the context of his artistic development through 40 years of his life in Los Angeles, displaying the full extent of his achievements. The exhibition’s name is derived from the West African principle of sankofa, which teaches individuals to go back to their roots, in order to move forward.

The exhibit presents the wide-range of Greenfield’s diverse artistic production, from traditional drawing and watercolor on paper, acrylic on canvas and collage/assemblage, to lenticular photography, manufactured embroidery, and mixed-media with plastics. It also includes his more recent explorations of video/animation and installation work.

Where:  California African American Museum, located at 600 State Drive, Exposition Park. Parking is $10 in the lot adjacent to the museum, at 39th and Figueroa streets.
