  • Shirley Washington Miller (’57) has been honored by the Stovall Educational Uplift Foundation for her work in education. She holds lifetime credentials in elementary education, secondary education and administration.

  • Nathaniel Trives (’68) was selected for the 2009 Santa Monica Alumni Recognition Awards. For five decades, Trives has served and volunteered his time with local, state and national organizations.
  • Craig Watkins (’69) was presented the Edwin Rhodes Award for being a prominent Chino pioneer citizen with an exemplar of ethical conduct, leadership and service.
  • Tony Wong (’69), the co-owner of W2 Designs, Inc., specializes in transportation engineering and construction management.

  • Deborah Proctor (MS ’76) is the president, CEO and board member of St. Joseph Health System. For the third year in a row, St. Joseph was awarded the Gallup Great Workplace Award.
  • Robert Rodgers (’70) is writing a coming of age novel about race, class and sexual identity, titled ‘The Death and Birth of Thomas Matthew.”
  • Chris Van Gorder (’78), the president and CEO of Scripps Health, was elected to serve as the chairman of the American College of Healthcare Executives.

  • Emanuel Brady, Jr. (’80), the vice president of information technology at Raytheon Space and Airborne systems, was named as one of the premier 100 IT leaders for 2009 in Computerworld magazine.
  • Raynor Carroll (’85) is a principal percussionist with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Carroll teaches some master’s classes at Cal State L.A.
  • Cathie Mostovoy (’86) is the chief executive officer of the nonprofit organization the Woodcraft Rangers, which sponsors youth and provides many afterschool activities to support low-income families.
  • Mary Su (’88) is serving as the first Chinese American Mayor of the city of Walnut. Prior to taking that position in 2006, she was a chairperson of the Parks and Recreation Commission.
  • Wilma Wilson (’85, MS ’89) is the executive director and founder of the Peace and Joy Care Center, Carson’s oldest shelter for battered women and children.

  • Monica Ling (’91) was named the 2009 Outstanding Staff Award honoree at Cal State L.A. Ling, an administrative support assistant for the University’s School of Nursing, was recognized for consistently producing high-quality work in a timely manner.

  • John Peter Alderete (’00) is a electric guitar bassist for the group “The Mars Volta,” an internationally renowned band and 2008 American Grammy award winner.
  • Amada Dominquez (’06, MM ’08) won fourth place in the Long Beach Mozart Festival.
  • Michael Ferrari (MA ’02) has published his master’s thesis as a novel, “Born to Fly.” The story is a historical fiction adventure for readers ages 8 to 12.
  • Benny Flores, Jr. (’00), an industrial automotive teacher at Azusa High School, was honored as the teacher of the year for his dedication in coaching football and work pioneering the Gladstone Car to be shown at its cross-town rivals’ campus.
  • Andre Khachtourians (’05) is receiving the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Rising Star Award at an upcoming regional meeting. See his photo in the “Their Say” section.
  • Portrait of Sintiana Khodaverdian.Sintiana (Cynthia) Khodaverdian (’07) has been promoted from experienced associate to senior associate at the public accounting, management consulting and personnel services firm Macias Gini & O’Connell LLP.
  • Andrea Kuilier (’09) will be attending Princeton this fall on a full-ride fellowship, after graduating with two degrees at the age of 17.
  • Ari Hovnanyan (MS ’04) was promoted to vice president and manager of Rabobank N.A.’s Westlake Village Branch.
  • Isabel Rojas-Williams (’07) received a request from the library of the Siqueiros Foundation of Mexico City to add her thesis to its permanent collection.

  • William R. “Bill” Antón (’52, MA ’54), spent his career working in the Los Angeles Unified School District, eventually rising to the ranks of superintendent. He was the first Latino schools superintendent in Los Angeles and he played a pivotal role in developing the district’s Title 1 program.
  • Portrait of Joanne Collins.Joanne Collins, an emerita professor of accounting, who taught at Cal State L.A. for more than two decades. She was a prolific researcher and author, with publications in a number of journals, and was recognized for encouraging students to become members of accounting organizations.
  • Portrait of Byong-kon Kim.Byong-kon Kim, an emeritus professor of music, who was recognized as one of the University’s Outstanding Professors in 1985-86 and a CSU Outstanding Professor nominee in 1991-92.

    He was a highly respected teacher of composition and theory known for his vast knowledge in contemporary techniques.

  • Tommy L. Mack (’58) was an established businessman and role model in the D.C. area. Mack was the chairman and owner of Tourmobile Sightseeing, a D.C. tour services company that takes visitors to historic sites, and he operated other parking and transportation businesses.
