When honors student Simona Filip Racek graduates with a Bachelor of Science in business administration, it will be the culmination of a journey that began a world away.
She was born in Transylvania, Romania, while the country was under Communist rule. It was a difficult time. Simona recalls the censorship, the rationing of everyday items and long lines for food.
She remembers the crumbling of the Communist regime and the beginning of political freedom. As a teenager, Simona became a member of the first social democratic youth party in Romania.
Simona arrived at Cal State L.A. as an international business student. She repeatedly made the Dean’s List and participated in the University’s Leadership Academy, which empowers students and trains them to be leaders who will engage their communities. Simona was invited to join the international honors societies of Beta Gamma Sigma, Golden Key and Phi Kappa Phi.
Her story is one of perseverance, hard work and an adventurous spirit, which led her to discover new opportunities and experience life on her own terms.
