Distinguished Educators Honored

In November, Cal State L.A.'s Charter School of Education presented its 1995 Distinguished Educator Award to alumni Alice Petrossian ('80 M.A. Education - Educational Administration) and Ruben Zacarias ('73 M.A. Education - Educational Administration) at a dinner in their honor.

Petrossian, a leader in education and a policy maker, is director of special projects and intercultural education for the Glendale Unified School District. She was recently appointed by Governor Pete Wilson to the California Community College Board of Governors and is a member of the executive committee.

Zacarias, Deputy Superintendent for the Los Angeles Unified School District, was recently appointed by President Clinton to the President's Advisory Committee on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. In this capacity, he advises the President and the Secretary of Education on the progress of Hispanic Americans toward achievement of the National Education Goals.

The prestigious Distinguished Educator Awards are given annually by the Friends of the School of Education, a support group comprising Cal State L.A. alumni, faculty, staff, professional educators, community leaders and others whose objectives are to provide scholarship assistance to students in CSLA's Charter School of Education and to support related projects.
